What does "activate your product" mean?

Product activation provides a way to validate a software license during software installation. By giving the publisher control over the number of times a serial number can be activated on one or two computers, it ensures that you follow the End User License Agreement (EULA). Activation is a simple process that has no affect whatsoever on your ability to use the software.

What is the product activation process and how does it work?

During installation, you will be prompted to enter the serial number that came with the software (either on the product CD or purchased over the internet). The serial number is passed to a server for authentication through a secure (SSL) internet connection. If the request is valid, an activation code is returned that unlocks the product immediately. If no internet connection is present, some publishers allow activation over the phone or by fax.

The authentication request is made up of unique product information as well as general information about the machine's hardware configuration. A successful request will generate a unique installation code that, combined with the serial number, will return an activation code that unlocks the software.

The hardware information that is used for the authentication request does not provide any details that could identify the end user or even the specific hardware on the machine. The information only provides a comparison for other authentication requests for the same serial number.

Can I install my software on more than one machine?

This depends on the software's publisher. Some publishers allow more than one activation per serial number to accommodate laptops or second PCs. If you need additional activations, you should contact the software publisher for support.
